Cyril Zipfel

Cyril Zipfel studied at diverse French universities during his undergraduate studies, before doing his PhD (2001-2005) at the Friedrich-Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research and the University of Basel (CH) under the supervision of Thomas Boller. He then was an EMBO Post-Doctoral Fellow (2005-2007) in the group of Jonathan Jones at The Sainsbury Laboratory in Norwich (UK). From 2007 until now, he has been Group Leader at The Sainsbury Laboratory (which he directed from 2014 to 2018), and since 2018 is Professor of Molecular and Cellular Physiology at the University of Zurich (CH). His laboratory is studying the molecular basis of plant innate immunity, and more generally of receptor kinase-based signaling in plants, as well as how this knowledge can be used to engineer stress-resistant crops. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers, secured Starting and Consolidator European Research Council grants, is a Highly Cited Researcher (since 2014), is the recipient of the 2015 Charles Albert Shull Award from the American Society of Plant Biologists and 2018 Tsuneko & Reiji Okazaki Award, and was elected to the European Molecular Biology Organization in 2018.
